4 Tips for Creating an Effective Poster Design

1. The User Comes First (think about what they will see)
2. Reduce Clutter (don't have too many things on it)
3. Use Text Sparingly (don't have too many words)
4. Think Big (posters are supposed to be large)

PSA Presentation

For my PSA, I downloaded images off of Google Images. I went into Windows Movie Maker and organized the images in the order I liked. I also found some statistics online and placed them with images. I recorded a voice-over and put that in my video, too. Since Windows Movie Maker only lets you put one piece of audio, I published my video from Movie Maker and opened it up in Adobe Premiere. There, I fixed a few last things and added the instrumental piece, River Flows in You by Yiruma.

PSA Resource Links

I looked at the ethemes website. The How to Make a PSA tutorial helped me understand what I should and should not do. I learned that I should use audio and sound effects only where appropriate. I also learned that I cannot make the PSA too long. I got a lot of tips to make my PSA better from this tutorial.

PSA

What type of PSA you will use? My PSA will be music with voice and text with pictures.

Outline of proposed structure.

My audience will include teachers and older students. I want to introduce the problem boldly, so I will try to address stereotypes about education in a manner that gives light to what some of us already know unconsciously. I will also relate some statistics about the problem. I want to have some music in order to get the person in the right mind-frame of sensitivity. Lastly, I want voice to deliver the final impact.

Begin preliminary identification of Presentation Capstone elements

1. Your management of the project is important toward making a successful presentation.
2. Define the scope or approach to your presentation: I want to give blatant information about the problem.
i. Will your capstone include constructing or purchasing explanatory props?Probably not.
ii. How will you present poster material (an easel, stand)? I will probably use a science fair-type board.
iii. Will you be fabricating a model or a 3d prototype? I will have a CD program.
iv. What is appropriate dress? A nurse outfit, a lab coat, a suit? Proper business attire.
v. What are important points to present in your verbal presentation? Present problem as important.
vi. Will you be presenting a brochure? Yes, I want to let people know about the stereotypes and possible ways to fix it.
vii. Will you be including presentation of the website, video, game or animation? I will probably try to use some animation in my video and will also try to include a website.

Look and Feel Issues

A. Will your presentation use comedy and humor or is it serious?
My PSA will use humor, but I want to impose a bit of seriousness towards the end when I relate some statistics about the problem.

B. What colors, fonts, design layouts, graphs, photographs, and other imagery are appropriate for the topic?
I want images of children of different races in a school environment. I also want bold, probably dark-colored font for the text.

C. How are your site, video, and print material persuasive?
My material is persuasive because I will attract attention with the humor and stereotypes, but persuade with my information (i.e. discuss future risks involved with a lack of proper education, etc.).

D. How do you make your point of view understood?
I want others to understand my view and will do so by explaining the various bits of information and statistics in order to show how important of a problem this is.

E. I am intending to create a orientation CD program for middle school teachers to follow in order to learn how to make equal educational opportunities for minority children.

Thinking ahead with PSA's

1. Key points: I want to emphasize that the achievement gap between the privileged students and the disadvantaged students is growing. I also want to note that teachers have the job that all their students achieve in, more or less, equal proportions.
2. I want to show statistics and pictures of students from different schools in my video. I also want music and a voice-over.
3. CT Achievement Gap PSA- Students state facts about the state of Connecticut and its achievement gap. There is music in the background, and each student has his or her own time to the camera.
"Students" - Teach For America PSA- The Teach For America group has a video with children of different backgrounds stating what they want to be when they grow up. As with the first video, each student seems to be interviewed and says what career they want when they are older.
